Introduction

This class covers techniques and tricks to help you get more done, faster. The goal of this class is to create a full 10 mm base within the class time. Discussions will include planning your work, workspace efficiency, creating tools, and painting effectively. The student will receive a base of Napoleonic Russian infantry to take home as a model for continuing in this style of painting. This class is sponsored by The Wargaming Company.

Step By Step

First Step: Bases, Shadow, Faces

  • 9109: Ruddy Leather
  • 9090: Misty Grey
  • 9047: Fair Skin
I like to paint the bases with a neutral color, I used Ruddy Leather. Staring with the pants, paint the crotch area with Misty Grey. Paint all of the faces with Fair Skin.  You can paint the hands now or later. Painting the hands later is recommended.

Step Two: Block Painting

  • 9061: Linen White
  • 9034: Muddy Olive
  • 9089: Cloudy Grey
Back to the pants, paint the pants Linen White. Paint the jacket Muddy Olive.
Paint the rolled great coat / blanket roll, Cloudy Grey.

Step Three: Light Details

  • 9004: Fire Red
  • 875: Beige Brown
  • 9053: Honed Steel
Paint all of the collars, cuffs, and turnback Fire Red. The strap on the right shoulder will also be Fire Red. This strap was uniformly colored based on seniority within the division from 1808: red 1st, white 2nd, yellow 3rd, dark green piped red 4th, and light blue 5th. 
Paint the musket Beige Brown and the barrel and bayonet Honed Steel.

Step Four: Dark Details

  • 9037: Black
  • 995: German Grey
  • 9110: Oiled Leather
Paint the ammo pouch, the backpack, shoes, scabbard, bayonet scabbard, and shako with Black and German Grey. The high side of the surfaces should be German Grey (top of the shako), using two colors for the black items will help to provide depth to the models. The musket strap should be painted Oiled Leather.

Step Five: Drum Details

  • 9059: Aged Bone
  • 9075: Buckskin Pale
  • 9110: Oiled Leather

Bits on the drummer, Aged Bone for the drum skin, Oiled Leather is the drum apron, the drum is Buckskin Pale. The rim of the drum should be alternating green and white triangles, since the scale is so small, paint the rim Muddy Olive.

Step Six: Kit Details

  • 9039: Pure White
  • 9053: Honed Steel
  • 9051: New Gold

Paint all shako cords and the drum cording, Pure White.

Staff color, Buckskin Pale (1st regiment). The Russian army (from 1808) used yellow for 1st and 4th regiment, black for 2nd and 5th , white for 3rd regiment.

Paint the canteen on the backpack, Honed Steel.

Paint the Shako plate, the point of the staff, and the officers’ gorget, New Gold.

Step Seven: Pompoms

  • 9008: Sun Yellow
  • 9011: Leaf Green
  • 9006: Fire Orange
 We are doing the first battalion. All get Yellow pompoms, Orange center for officer, Green center for infantry. One can be solid yellow to represent the light troops. Grenadiers would be red, but may likely be pulled out into converged Grenadier units, so they we will not be representing them here.  The 3rd battalion would be red with yellow center, light is yellow top. Officer is unchanged.

Step Eight: Wash

 Wash the dark part of the figures with Army Painter Soft. Don’t get this on the pants as it will dull them down. The shako cords are going to be muted by this step but it will help offset them from the rest of the figure and not look so bright.

Step Nine: Banners

Rough cut out the banner. Fold it at the staff line, then cut it squarely. Use white glue to moisten the flag and then put it on the staff. Crumble and work the flag so that it does not hang squarely form the staff. Add some folds and let it dry.
