I figured I would take David's new forum out for a spin and document progress building my Austrian Army.

BACKGROUND

My Austrians are probably the oldest figures I own.  Some going back to the early 1980's.  They are based 1/60 scale for 'From Valmy to Waterloo'.  Probably the most detailed set ever created.  A nice set long out of print that you need to live so you can remember all the rules.  Since I've finished my Prussian, Saxon, Bavarian and a large part of my French army, it's now time to start my Austrians.

FIGURES, BASING, ETC.

I use Heroics & ROS (H&R) 6mm figures for my Napoleonics.  Now, if I was starting today I would be all over the ESR boxed sets.  I've seen and gamed with them at Fall In 2018.  My newer armies for other periods are mainly 10's but I just don't feel like getting rid of thousands of painted figures.  I know that's not very wargamer like of me but so be it! 😀

My bases are pretty much standard ESR.  30mm x 20mm.

  • Infantry are mainly 3 ranks of infantry figures at 24 figures per base/battalion.
  • Cavalry are 5 figures per base. I usually build the required number of squadrons.
  • Artillery are one cannon and 3 figures=3pdr (light) battery, 4 figures=6pdr (medium) battery, 4 figures & mounted officer=horse or fast foot battery & 5 figures=12pdr(heavy) battery.

Even though I'm starting with some already painted figures, the amount is really very small so most everything will be a new build.

Next, I'll post about how I go about deciding what & how much to build along with the current status of painting.  Not sure if I'll post again until after Cold Wars so everyone have a safe trip to Lancaster and I'll be the one wearing the old California Golden Seals jersey on Friday.

The Army

Here's the layout for my Austrian Army.  This will allow me to build at least 2+ Corps & 1 Reserve Division.  I should be able to field a good size army for any 1809+ campaign.

I just finished a Curassier regiment and 13 reformation area last weekend.  In the next day or two I'll post some pictures.  I have the complete III Corps from early 1809 complete except for 6 hussar stands.  (Patiently waiting for re-enforcements to arrive via USPS)

One last item, most of my German Line Infantry will be in shakos with only a few in helmets.  I read someplace in the last 6 months that some recent research showed that more german infantry units wore shakos then is commonly thought of.  Unfortunately I can't find that information anymore and don't remember the web site.  Also, I play mainly 1812+ so that works for me.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply.

Here's an update exactly 6 months into the year of Austria.  Changes since the last update are in red.  Most of the work lately was with finishing the 27 Limbers to complete the artillery park.  I've completed the III Corps in 1809. (See pictures attached.)  Finally, I completed the last 6 squadrons of Kurassiers for a total of 4 regiments and 24 squadrons.  Next I plan on working on 2, 6 squadron Dragoon regiments.  That will complete the cavalry for the 1 Reserve Corps of 1809.

I've decided to take a small break because I've declared July the month of terrain.  Plan to work on some trees and paper buildings I've put off too long.  See you at Historicon!

That's not a bad idea having a breakdown of what you have going.  Even the pic looks good too.  😀

Thanks.  I use a spreadsheet for each army I'm working on.  Has units, with uniforms color painting information.

July was the Month of Terrain.  I built about 90 trees, have another 40 in-progress and have another 160 on order.  Also at Historicon during one of the flea markets, I purchase about 100 smaller size 6mm sort of miscast resin buildings for $10.  These will look great in groups with my H&R's.

Now back to Austrian white.
