Fred, I know there are several groups playing with some changes to adapt ESR to the SYW, and we have done a little work in-house on what changes would be appropriate and necessary for both the SYW and the ACW, but I'd too be interested in hearing if anyone is playing ESR modified for ACW with their local group.

No problem. It is something we have/are considering.

Can't wait to see the report on Austerlitz!

Thinking about it a bit, the 2 major changes would have to be the range of skirmishing/artillery ranges and how cavalry is handled. I think the command system would be a good match, as both sides in the ACW used the corps-model for their armies. Each stand, in ESR a battalion, would have to a brigade. Maybe larger brigades could be represented by multiple stands.

Maybe cavalry could be treated as fast light infantry. Artillery range could be increased about 50%?

Actual combat, which in ESR represents this as close shooting and melee, could be started at ranges of 150 yards, so at standard scale, bases could be an inch away? But think of the mess that 2 large forces would have colliding into one another and trying to determine who is in "combat" with whom, if there is no need to actually touch bases in order to engage? Possibly, a way to address this is to increase skirmish characteristics to make many engagements decided by a shooting match without the need for base contact, as they were historically.
