This is an extreme example, but if an infantry formation was on a Defend order and found itself in need to deploy its battalions on all 4 sides and surrounded, where do you place the Reformation area, inside what would effectively be a massive divisional square or would it remain outside of this and between it an it's friendly table edge/lines of communication etc.

Generally speaking, the assumption is that a Formation always has a "rear" and can't completely seal itself off from the world.
If the Formation's footprint was so large that the distance from any given side to the center of its "square" was greater than 900 yards – so that the Reformation Area also had room in addition to that distance – then I suppose it would be difficult to take issue with it. But, circumstances that would allow a Formation to cover that large a footprint – and not have massive holes in its lines that would allow the enemy to move "behind" it to its center, become rather ridiculous.
So practically speaking, a Formation can't seal its Reformation Area off from the enemy without the help of other friendly Formations.
