Played the battle of Vitebsk yesterday from the 1812 scenario book, solid Russian victory, unfortunately for my French. My opponent played a solid game, but was aided by exceptionally bad die rolling on my part in the early cavalry battle, resulting in losing that flank.Â
At one point, the Russian cavalry had fallen back, activating a new objective point for the Force in the rear area, one formation was in (RR) status while the other moved to the new objective. Our assumption was that as soon as it was able to remove the (RR) status and converted to (D), it would then move toward the objective point to join with the other formation in the Force, correct?
Also, just to confirm, formations on (M)ove or (A)ttack directives, would not be able to contract or expand frontages given the requirement to move directly to its objective, correct? Â

A defend [D] directive indicates a Formation will defend its current location, so no, it would need a different directive to move towards the Force's objective from wherever it was when it converted to defend [D].

Generally speaking a Formation is allowed to expand or contract its frontage no matter its active order directive. However, you are correct that both a move [M] or attack [A] directive would require it to move towards the Force's objective.
