Must an objective always be a physical landmark? Can it not be an enemy unit? For example engage the enemy formation to the left of the village would allow me to move within 900 yards and start bombarding it.

Yes, one of the objectives listed in 3.5 Force Order Objectives is “A specific enemy Formation”. Do keep in mind that if you have a specific enemy Formation as your Force’s objective, and you give one of your Formations an attack [A] order, you are essentially telling that Formation to chase its target to the death... I generally don't recommend it.
