What happens if a ployed formation is attacked from the flank. Can they close combat?

In ESR there is only “combat”, it is all encompassing of mêlée and musketry. Assuming that what you’re asking is if ployed Units contacted by the enemy will roll normally during the Combat Resolution step of the Combat Phase, the answer is yes.
