After the assessment in the combat phase, a cavalry formation received a result that it may evade. We allowed the cavalry to fall back out of enemy cavalry charge range as the rule 6.5.2 stated they must move farther than 450 yards from enemy cavalry; and allowed it to reform its battle lines.
Did we fall back too far and allowing it to reform it's battle lines was likely too generous in hindsight.
How far should they have fallen back and should we have not allowed them a complex maneuver of reforming?

The intent of 'evade' is to move the cavalry to just outside 450 yards (skirmishing range) of infantry and enemy cavalry, or just outside 900 yards of enemy artillery. You can find the specific reference in the Glossary/Index under 'Evade'.
As to reforming them, while it is not stated either way in the text, most players allow an evading (or retreating [RT] or broken [BK] Formation) to rearrange its component Units as it pleases.
