Conversion of Unit Combat Ratings [CR] and Commander Ratings [LR+TR] between ESR Second Edition and other popular Napoleonic rulesets.

Our Napoleonic Campaign Guides are designed to work with just about any Napoleonic wargaming rule set you like. The maps are in scale miles, the orders of battle are down to the number of battalions and batteries, the timing of events is by time not turns.

But…

It doesn't seem right that you'd have to spent a long period of time figuring out what ESR Combat Ratings [CR], Commanders' Leadership Ratings [LR], or Tactical Ratings [TR] were equivalent to the ratings of your favorite rule set. So we're trying to help with that too.

And if your favorite Napoleonic set isn't included *yet* please let us know.

Et sans résultat! Original Edition uses a Combat Rating range of 1 to 10 and uses only two Unit Characteristics: Lights and Irregulars.

Et sans résultat! Second Edition reduces the range of Combat Ratings to 1 to 7 and introduces additional Unit Characteristics, including Shock, to allow a finer grain of differentiation between Units.

Command Ratings in Original Edition have a wider span, while in ESR Second Edition, effectively no Commanders are rated as below average.

The Age of Eagles uses brigades as the basic unit on the tabletop, which requires amalgamating Units from ESR orders of battle. Determine the average Combat Rating [CR] of the Units being grouped into a brigade simply by adding their CR values and dividing by the number of Units in the brigade.

The AoE recommendations regarding treatment of 'Old Guard' Units may be used unchanged. Similarly, if a majority of the brigade's Units were considered irregular [I], then the brigade is designated as irregular in AoE. If at least half the infantry Units making up a brigade were designated as lights [L] then the brigade is treated as skirmish capable in AoE. Cavalry with the lights [L] characteristic is designated as light cavalry in AoE. Lance and cuirass equipped cavalry should be dealt with normally per AoE. Engineering [E] and rifle [RF] Specialty Units are ignored as AoE does not utilize them, unless addressed by special scenario rules.

ESR Leadership Ratings [LR] correspond to the die roll modifiers for AoE's Initiative & Reserve rolls. ESR Tactical Ratings [TR] are generally not translated to AoE but for the Charismatic trait.

Battles for Empire uses a system of eight morale grades to differentiate between Units.

Units designated as Lights [L] in ESR Second Edition are considered to be Skirmish [SK] and Units designated as Irregulars [I] are considered to be Open Order [ON] Units when using Battles for Empire.

BoE uses both Leadership Modifiers and Leadership Ratings, the second of which do not directly correspond to anything in ESR and will need to be implemented as the players feel appropriate. Similarly, BoE does not offer any feature that directly corresponds to ESR's Tactical Ratings [TR].

Corps d'armée allows many units to drop into open order, these should be designated as either lights [L] or irregulars [I] based on the unit. ESR offers broader Unit quality variations than does Corps d'armée through the use of characteristics like shock [S1, S2, S3] and players can use these additional variations to make their games more scenario specific.

Piquet uses a variety of modifiers to arrive at the Basic Die Value [BVD] for any given Unit, this can make conversion from ESR Second Edition both more flexible and more complicated.

Recommended BVDs are given here in the order of Fire, Mêlée, and Morale.

Player should strongly consider the equipment available to a given Unit between ESR Second Edition and Piquet as further adjustments may be appropriate for lance armed cavalry and the like. All Units classified as irregulars [I] or lights [L] in ESR should be allowed skirmish formation and considered to move as 'natives' when in skirmish formation.

Players are also advised to consider using card divisors to address ESR's Formation Characteristics when an Army has a majority of Formations with a given characteristic:

One of the first systems to invoke National Characteristics, Quarrie's Rules used a plethora of them, which can be difficult to replicate with systems that streamline such ratings as ESR does. The following recommendations are starting points for translating ESR Combat Ratings to Quarrie's Rules. The ratings are provided in the order of Fire, Mêlée, and Morale Factors. Units indicated in ESR as having the shock [S] characteristic should use the shock modifier to increase the other three ratings. Each point of shock [S] may increase Fire, Mêlée, or Morale by '1'. A Unit's morale may never go above '10' and points used to increase Fire Factors for cavalry cost double, i.e. 2 points increase the cavalry Fire Factor by '1'.

Impetuous [IM] cavalry are assumed to have a Control Factor of 4-5. Irregular [I] cavalry have a Control Factor of 4.

Quarrie's Rules included much commentary on various Commanders but no specific rules for them impacted the execution of orders, morale, or combat. ESR Commander Ratings are ignored.
